About the artist behind Bexart Studio

- Rebecca Hill -

Rebecca — better known as Bec — is an award-winning Australian artist whose work sits at the intersection of curiosity, nature, and emotional depth. Known for her loose impressionist style, expressive mark-making, and unmistakable quirks, Bec creates artworks that feel both playful and deeply human.

Based in the foothills of the Grampians in South West Victoria, Bec draws daily inspiration from the natural world around her — wildlife, weathered textures, and the quiet rhythms of life outdoors. From a very young age, creativity was instinctive. With a pencil rarely far from hand, she explored the world through drawing, pattern-making, and imaginative play, quickly becoming known within her school and local community for her artistic talent.

Interestingly, Bec’s path was not a straight line. In her later years of education, she veered into the world of science, pursuing a more academic direction. It wasn’t until she was home caring for her young children that creativity resurfaced — not as a hobby, but as a grounding force. Picking up a paintbrush again ignited something unmistakable, transforming a lifelong love of art into a professional career.

Over the years, Bec has experimented widely across mediums and techniques before developing her own intuitive way of giving life to the canvas. Her body of work spans realistic oil and acrylic paintings, loose and expressive impressionistic pieces, and free-flowing mixed media works on lush art paper. Each artwork begins with a rough, unpolished sketch and a messy underpainting — a process that often resembles abstraction before clarity emerges.

This fluid approach allows Bec to explore not only visual creativity, but emotional expression — something especially evident in her much-loved pet portraits, where personality, connection, and story are just as important as likeness.

Bec’s work has earned numerous awards and accolades and is held in private collections across Australia. She is represented by several regional galleries and supplies a select group of stockists with original artworks and fine art prints. While she is widely recognised for her quirky teacup paintings, animals remain a central muse — inspired by their peculiar, inquisitive, and sometimes mischievous nature. Capturing individuality and spirit is at the heart of everything she creates.

While Bec is a self-taught artist, her creative journey has always carried a deeper thread — a fascination with emotion, inner worlds, and the quiet power of creative expression. This lifelong curiosity recently evolved into a new professional direction.

After completing her qualification in Holistic Art Therapy and gaining professional membership with IICT (International Institute for Complementary Therapists), Bec now extends her practice beyond the canvas, offering art therapy sessions alongside her established art career. This work weaves together creativity, mindfulness, and emotional exploration — something that has always lived beneath the surface of her artistic practice.

Art has never just been about making something beautiful — it has always been about feeling, processing, and connection.

Art therapy is a complementary extension of Bec’s work, not a departure from it — a way of supporting others through creativity while continuing to create from the same intuitive, heart-led place.
